Barcelona – Intermodality

Intermodality in Barcelona

Graded color map according to the levels of intermodality in the city of Barcelona.

The intermodality indicator illustrates the levels of intermodality in Barcelona, indicating access to different modes of public transport and cycling in different areas of the city. The highest levels of intermodality (levels 3 and 4) are concentrated mainly in central areas such as L’Eixample, Ciutat Vella, and parts of Sant Martí, Sant Andreu, Sants-Montjuïc, and Gràcia, reflecting high connectivity between five or more modes of transport (e.g., metro, buses, trains, streetcar and bicycle lanes).

In peripheral areas, such as Horta-Guinardó, Nou Barris, and areas of Sant Andreu, less intermodality is observed, with a predominance of levels 1 and 2, indicating more limited access to available modes of transport.

The areas corresponding to level 0, i.e., where there is no intermodality, are located mostly in the periphery or in less urbanized areas, such as the hills of Carmel and Guinardó, or the mountain of Montjuïc.

The general pattern shows a concentration of public transport resources in the urban center and densely populated areas, while peripheral areas present challenges in terms of connectivity and multimodal accessibility.
