Cyclability in Granada
Cyclability
Cyclability indicates the quality of a city’s cycling infrastructure to make it safe and accessible for bicycle travel.
Granada is characterized by its high cyclability in the center due to a wide network of pedestrian streets. High cyclability values are concentrated in 10% of the urban core. The bicycle lane network is not very dense. The eastern third of the city registers the lowest values of cyclability due to its orography.
What does cyclability depend on?
The degree of cyclability is the result of different factors: cycling capacity, distance to the nearest bike lane, bikeway intersections, bike share stations and slope.
Cyclable capacity
The cycling capacity in Granada is explained by the presence of bicycle lanes and the predominance of pedestrian and reverse priority streets. The city has more than 40km of bike lanes distributed in seven axes that cross the city. Cycling capacity is high in 9% of the urban core. The lowest values of cyclability are found in the western third of the city and in the periphery.
Distance to the cycling network
The average distance to the cycling network in Granada is 177 meters. The spatial distribution is very uneven. The highest values are found in the vicinity of the city’s seven bike lanes. The historic center, the Albaicín, the northwest industrial park and Alquería del Frague are far away from the cycling infrastructure.
Density of interactions in cycling lanes.
The density of intersections between bikeways is high in 10% of Granada. Three high-density cycling interaction nodes stand out: the first is formed by the Centro-Sagitario neighborhoods; the second, in the north, between Cartuja and La Paz; and the third, in the south, in Zaidín and Cervantes.
