Electric micro-mobility in Palma
Electric Micromobility
The suitability of the built environment for personal electric mobility vehicle (PMV) trips in cities is measured using the electric micromobility indicator. It takes into account the infrastructure capacity for PMVs, the available network, the safety of road intersections for PMVs, lighting, areas without public transport, and the percentage of the young population.
In Palma de Mallorca, the highest values of this indicator are concentrated in the central areas and near the coast. Areas such as Es Camp Rodó, Son Espanyolet, Puig de Sant Pere, Cas Capiscol, Son Cotoner and Can Pere Antoni show a high potential to facilitate electric micro-mobility travel, benefiting from a more developed infrastructure and a favorable environment for this type of transport. Other neighborhoods such as Son Serra Perera, Ets Hostalets, S’Eixample and Ciutat Antiga also stand out for their adequacy.
However, the lowest values are observed in the peripheral and higher altitude areas, such as Sant Agustí, Son Ferriol, Génova and Verge de Lluch. These areas are less suitable for VMPs, possibly due to the topography and the lower density of infrastructure for these modes of transport.
Capacity of Infrastructure for Electric PMVs
The infrastructure capacity for electric personal micro-mobility vehicles is high in only 5% of the city. This is because Palma has only 92km of bike lanes and an infrastructure that extends radially from the historic center to the periphery. Also noteworthy are the high values associated with the coastal bike path, from Can Pere Antoni to Coll d’en Rabassa. Average values are found in those areas of the city close to the network of bike lanes and radial roads from the center to the periphery, along with some pacified areas where it is possible to ride VMP. The lowest values are found in the areas between the radial roads that do not have infrastructure and in the periphery, where infrastructure is also scarce.
Available Network for Electric PMVs
The percentage of road network available for PMVs within a 30-minute trip varies significantly between the center and the periphery. In fact, some of the central neighborhoods of Palma, such as Es Camp Rodó, Son Cotoner, Cas Capiscol, Son Serra Perera, and Ets Hostalets, have values exceeding 90%. Surrounding these areas, neighborhoods like Puig de Sant Pere, Son Espanyolet, Ciutat Antiga, S’Eixample, Son Dureta, Son Rapinya, Es Rafal Vell, La Soletat, and Can Pere Antoni also show very high values, ranging between 70% and 90%. In contrast, peripheral areas such as Sant Agustí, Gènova, and Son Ferriol have values below 40%.
Safety of Road Intersections for Electric PMVs
Only 13.9% of Palma’s surface has a very high degree of safety at its intersections for driving with PMV. This area corresponds to the neighborhoods of the historic center such as Puig de Sant Pere, Es Camp Rodó, Cas Capiscol, Ets Hostalets, S’Eixampla, Ciutat Antiga and La Soletat, as well as some areas near the coast such as Can Pere Antoni and Es Molinar. There are also some nodes with high safety values on the periphery, such as Sant Agustí and Teulera de Son Rapinya. On the other hand, the lowest values are mostly found in the periphery, in Génova, Son Rapinya, es Pinaret, Can Maiol, Verge de Lluch, Es Rafal Vell and Son Ferriol.
Roadway Lighting
In Palma, road infrastructures for PMV are unevenly lit, with more lighting concentrated in the historic center, the coast, and some more peripheral neighborhoods. Values are high in 16% of the city. The best-lit areas coincide with some of the highest capacity roads, such as the roads that border and connect the city with the historic center, as well as those that run along the coastal area. The lowest values are found in Gènova, Teulera de Son Rapinya, Es Pinaret, Cas Misser, Can Maiol and Son Molines, in mountainous areas and large urban parks (Bellver and Son Vida) and on the outskirts of the city.
Areas Without Public Transport
52.4% of Palma is under-supplied with public transport. The areas with the least public transport facilities are located on the eastern seafront (Can Pere Antoni, Es Molinar and Es Coll d’en Rabassa), the mountainous areas of the city (Bellver and Son Vida) and in some peripheral areas such as Gènova, Teulera de Son Rapinya, Son Rapinya, es Pinaret, son Dureta and Son Molines. On the contrary, the urban center and Sant Agustí, Cas Capiscol, Verge de Lluch, Es Rafal Vell and Son Ferriol, concentrate a large number of public transport services.
Young Population
In Palma, the population between 16 and 35 years of age predominates in the neighborhoods of the historic center of the city, but also in other more remote areas such as El Terreno, Cala Major, Son Dureta, Cas Capiscol and Teulera de Son Rapinya, and in mountainous areas such as Bellver and Son Vida. The lowest values are concentrated on the east coast and in some peripheral areas such as Gènova, Son Rapinya, es Pinaret, Son Serra Perera, Cas Misser and Es Rafal Vell.
