Cyclability in Valencia

Cyclability

Map showing cyclability in the city of Valencia.

Cyclability indicates the quality of a city’s cycling infrastructure to make it safe and accessible for bicycle travel.

Valencia has an extensive cycling infrastructure, present in all neighborhoods. High cyclability values are concentrated in 44% of the urban core. The most cyclable places in the city are Benimaclet, Ciutat Universitària, Exposició and Mestalla, in the north, and Malva-rosa and Cabanyal, in the east.

What does cyclability depend on?

The degree of cyclability results from various factors: cycling capacity, distance to the nearest bike lane, cycling route intersections, shared bike stations, and slope.

Cyclable capacity

Valencia has more than 175 km of bicycle lanes, forming a dendritic network that follows the pattern of the main avenues. A corridor of segregated, two-way cycling infrastructure runs from northwest to southeast along the boundary of the Turia Gardens. Cycling capacity is high in 35% of the urban core. Values are very low in the historic city center, with predominantly pedestrianized streets.

Distance to the cycling network

Valencia has a dense, well-connected and proximity bike lane network. The great exception is the historic center of the city, which is notable for the absence of cycling networks. The average distance to the cycling network is 90.5 meters.

Density of interactions in cycling lanes.

The density of intersections between bikeways is high in 12% of Valencia. The historic center of the city stands out for the high density of cycling interactions as a consequence of the predominance of pedestrian streets and 30 zones. The Avenida de Blasco Ibáñez, a green avenue extending eastward from the city center, and the campus of the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, in the northeast, also have high densities of interactions between cycling paths. The lowest values are located in the southern periphery of the city.

Bicycle parking density

Valencia has an average of 20 bicycle stations per hectare. Private bicycle and Valenbisi stations are unevenly distributed throughout the city. Much of the bicycle parking is concentrated on the north-south axis between Torrefiel, the old town and Russafa. The rest is concentrated in Benimaclet, Exposició and Mestalla (northeast), and to a lesser extent in Cabanyal and La Llum, on the outskirts of the city.

Slope
